great looking substrate
have used in my goldfish tank and they stay clean and I know the lava rock is a good spot for beneficial bacteria, better to use for smaller fish to lower the risk of a fish eating them

Plenty for an interior fireplace
I was a little concerned that there would not be enough to fill my fireplace, there was plenty. Great value! The color was as dark as you could expect from lava rock. Anyone who wants darker does not need lava rocks.

Great for fire pit
I purchased these to fill up a propane fire pit. They look great, arrived quickly and the pricing was fair compared to other options. The rocks are matte black which is going to help them maintain their look, unlike glass rock which can burn and change colors. Very satisfied.

Overall good
There was a variety of lava stones in the bag as you can see, it's good for me because i use it as a drainage for my small/big planters, although later on I found a bigger amount of drainage/lava rocks in a chipper price at Lowe's!! Overall it was nice to get this ones to my step door especially on those cold rainy winter days here in Cali :) I weighted the bag (part by part with a small scale) and it was a few oz less than 10 pounds, it didn't bother me because it was a matter off only a few rocks to get there.

The bag contained about 1-2 lbs of dust.
The product is nice and what I was hoping to receive. But out of the two bags I ordered, I bet I got 2-3 lbs of dust. Disappointed in the value of this product.

More dark grey rather than black.

Exploding lava rocks are as scary as it sounds.
They look great! Let's get that out of the way. Yes, they add that great ambiance to your fire pit. However, then they start exploding--and thats when the real excitement begins. I mean, who wants to just relax by their fire pit with a beverage when you could be dodging randomly bursting hot lava rocks. They worked wonderfully the first afternoon, but after the rocks got slightly damp from the evening dew, the lava rocks turned into pop rocks when I turned on my fire pit. All the nooks on the surface trap the water. When you turn on the fire, the water turns to steam and pressure builds and builds and builds until the rocks start to pop like popcorn, except way more dangerous. I cannot recommend them for use in propane fire tables. They are very dangerous... And slightly scary.

UPDATE one year later
I purchased this product as a means of controlling fungus gnats in my house plants. I removed the top inch of pot soil and replace it with the lava rock. Not only did it eliminate the gnats, it also gives the plants a very nice natural look! I’m purchasing another bag so that all my plants have the same look. Although some reviews say the product had a lot of dust, the bag I received had very little. The pebble size was also perfect for my need. UPDATE: Oct 2019, one year later, unfortunately my success with fungus gnats was short lived. I’ve tried everything, watering with hydrogen peroxide, sticky stiks, need oil, ACV & dishsoap, organic insecticide sprays ... I’ve extensively researched and gave it my best shot but I can’t seem to get rid of fungus gnats long term. Sadly it’s time to face reality and get rid of my plants. If you’re thinking of buying this to control fungus gnats, I wish you luck. If you’re buying it to improve the finished look of your houseplants, I do highly recommend it. I hope this update is useful.

Assortment of sizes
Our Jøtul natural gas fireplace's original lava stones were dusting down and there were gaps developing on the heat tray, so we decided to see about getting replacement rocks. I decided on this item based largely on the reviews and for the sizes inside this package. Other choices mostly seemed to be pea-sized, which were too small, and this one offered 1/2 inch to 1 inch rocks, which sounded about the right size we needed. This 10 lb bag (received in its own box with other items on my order) was indeed far more than we needed, but it worked out well as we could go to town on making the hearth stones more realistic than even with what originally that came with the fireplace. I'd say the sizes actually range from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches. Some or the rocks appeared to be glazed and heavier than normal lava rocks, and others the perfect pocked appearance lava rocks usually look like. Then added some rock wool using tweezers to pull thin strands and land them on between the rocks to give the fireplace that glowing ember appearance and it's now all ready for another cold winter! One tip - and only if you're confident enough to work with the lava rocks without the glass insert placed in (meaning open, although I wouldn't recommend it, but I've been known to throw caution to the wind when I shouldn't) - while testing the flame flow and appearance, keep a pair of long tongs handy to move the rocks around to even out the flames, or even to remove any lava pieces that happen to whistle (some do as they are pretty porous) and replace with other rocks. I'm only glad I did as I would've had to wait for the glass and top assembly to cool down again to replace 2 big ones I used that happened to screech whenever the flames came on.

Exploding rocks
I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing. Rocks worked fine for the first couple of uses. Once the rocks get wet, or moisture builds up they become dangerous! Do not buy these rocks unless you want to experience what it feels like to be relaxing next to a spewing volcano!!

Don't buy this product
The spec of 1/2" to 1" is incorrect. About 25% of the packet contents were much smaller that 1/2" and mostly black dust - very small particles. I had to and still continue to try and remove the very troublesome black dust and small particles.
