Gives you the classic look.

This stuff smells great (subtle but noticeable up close). It holds well even in wind, and has a nice high shine that doesn't look greasy. Definitely gives you that classic, Don Draper/ 1950s gentleman's hairstyle.

Mmm lanolin

As advertised: Easy to apply cream that gives a light hold and a high shine with a faint vanilla scent. My hair is fine, thin, graying, and fairly short. For everyday I don't want or need a lot of hold. A tiny dab of this adds softness, shine and just enough hold to tame the fly-away hairs. If I want a smooth slick-back a larger amount of this either alone or over a stronger pomade creates the slick, shiny look of an oil based pomade that mostly rinses out with warm water. The scent is pleasant going on, but I don't smell it all day unlike some other hair products that I've tried. Using this daily adds softness to the hair almost like a conditioner. I really like this product.

The best I've found

I don't typically write reviews (too lazy really) but I feel I must do so for this product, because it's so good. Let me explain: I've been searching for practically all my adult life for the right hair product, and I must have tried every gel (hello '80s), paste, wax and pomade out there. Never been satisfied. Is it that much to ask for (1) a good hold, but not stiff or dry (2) a great sheen (3) no or minimal smell (4) easy to wash out? Well, let me tell you, that's apparently a heckuva lot to ask for, because I've never found the perfect combo in one product. Until now. This stuff is perfect. It's practically scentless and surprisingly soft and creamy. Goes on easily and washes out pretty cleanly in just warm water (I rarely use shampoo because it's so drying). They recommend you apply to dry hair – I usually towel dry but never blow dry, and it works great. I have a pretty short haircut, old fashioned "short back and sides" style, and I like a crisp part. Once rubbed in, I use a brush to get started, and it's a little tuggy at first – that would be my only gripe, but it's so insignificant, I wouldn't even call it that. Brush to get the general style right, then use a comb to create the parting. Smooth a little with my hands, and done. Residue on the hands is easy to rinse off. The sheen is excellent and lasts pretty well. What's also nice is, the hold is definitely there, but the hair doesn't harden or go shell-like. You can run your fingers through your hair or adjust it during the day. The hair feels a little tacky, but not sticky or goopy. It's easy to smooth down a stray tuft. The sheen tends to fade a bit toward the end of the day, but you can revive that some by smoothing down with damp hands. After all these years I've finally found my ideal hair product.

Great control and shine but smell ruins it

This comes so close to being the perfect pomade that adds shine, offers medium control, and is easy to rework when needed. Despite all those positives, I stopped using it after a few days because I can't get past the smell. The smell of vanilla (which I always thought of in positive terms until now) is overpowering and sickly sweet. I'm genuinely baffled as to why they thought men would like this scent and certainly why they added so much. For the record, I've never had a problem with the scent of anything else and actually like a wide range of scents in men's products. Do not recommend.

Bottom Line: Awesome shine, great hold, way easy to wash out. Just go slow and easy when applying.

This is a GREAT pomade; I deduct one star ONLY because of the smell (plastic/glue smell; I hear they are working to improve it). The smell does not last though so don't worry. Working it into dry hair is a challenge and best done with care, like all water based pomades. Go slow, or leave your hair towel-dry-damp to make it a lot easier (although dampness = less final hold). Once you get your hair coated, it combs just fine (at least on my straight, fine hair), just again take it slow and easy with the comb. On dry hair, I would call the hold pretty strong, even though the jar says "medium." I have used American Crew "medium hold" pomade, and the Layrite has a MUCH stronger hold than the American Crew. The shine is OUTSTANDING; as good as Brylcreem with a MUCH stronger hold (which is why I tried it in the first place). Another pro: It washes out with NO trouble using JUST water. Con: It washes out with NO trouble using JUST water. If you get caught in the rain, you're done for. I still use Brylcreem if I know I might get wet; may try some other oil-based pomades as well just to avoid this. Bottom Line: Awesome shine, great hold, way easy to wash out. Just go slow and easy when applying.

Good stuff.if you can stand the smell.

I have tryed many different pomades.most that wash out easily claim to be high in shine but really they turn out not to give a great shine.This gives a lovely shine that actually lasts and it's also easy to apply.The hold is also fine if you have short hair.however the smell is not great.its not an awful smell but it's also not a great smell(unless you absolutely love vannila).The smell also just stays and doesn't get any better over time.many reviews say it isn't a strong scent,but I find the sent really quite strong and annoying.its a shame because apart from the smell it is excellent stuff and gives a high long lasting shine without looking greasy also it is easy to wash out.But I have had to stop using it because I find the scent very annoying.

Great but the smell is a little strange.

The hold is great and hair doesn't feel like it has product in. There is a little bit of a learning curve to get the amount you need right if you use too much your hair will feel horrible, less is more. When brushed through wet hair the smell changes from vanilla to a sort of melted crayon vanilla tinted smell. However when its dry it goes back to a normal nice smell so just be prepared for it to be intense when wet. WIth straight hair it works best with slightly wet hair and a small amount of product combed through. The jar and design itself is nice and feels professional rather than just hceap plastic.

Literally the best pomade I have ever used

this is quite possibly my favorite hair dressing/pomade a very high shine with a hold that isn't to much on the stiff side. in all honesty, I've been looking for some bad points to this pomade, and I really can't! Although it is slightly on the pricier side it's worth every penny, it has a clean and subtle scent, like strawberries and cream Perfect for the full slickback or styling a greaser pomp!, a great all rounder!

It smells of vanilla but it isn't overly powerful so you don't smell like biscuits! It's non sticky and gives your hair a great shine and smooths down any baby hairs and fly aways. I would recommend this product for anyone wanting shiny looking healthy hair. Oh, I purchased it because I do vintage hairstyles and it sculpts those curls beautifully!
