These will HURT your assailant, but depending on your shoe's design, these might require some karate skills or are plain useless
First of all, SELF DEFENSE ONLY, if you want to go around hurting people with these for fun, seek help. I put these on my boots and spray painted them tan, so they kind of "blend" well. All I can say is, you really need to do a sidesweep type of Karate kick for these to be effective if the laces on your boots, like on mine, are so high that you'll try to be making contact with your assailant's leg (or whatever) with the upper part of your foot which arguably is harder (and takes longer to set up for that type of kick) than doing a quick front kick. Now, that's not to say this product is flawed, it does the job, it WILL hurt, but at least for now my concern is, it's really the fact that my boots are not designed like the ones in the photo which are closer to the toes, and I'm no karate master, but it's simple to realize that when you try to kick someone, you're more apt to make contact with the lower part of your foot and perhaps your toes, as opposed to the area closer to your ankle; whether that's "bad form" or not, I can't be the judge, but trying to use these on a tree, I found myself actually being brought back to Tae Kwan Do class and using my hips to put more force into the kick in order to make the desired contact: kubakickz --> tree. Why I'm saying this at all is, I feel we all (even we former martial artists - white/yellow belts highest level included) we revert to doing "lazier" kicks outside of the dojo, especially in a tight situation, close quarters; if an assailant is coming after you, how much time do you really have to get into a proper stance and do a "hip twist powered kick?" I can see myself kicking an assailant but I don't seeing myself (or the assailant letting me) get into a karate stance before he slashes my throat. So what's the alternative, a front kick? That would negate having the kubakickz at all because I'd be making contact with the soles or the tip of the boot. In the end, I'll give these 4 stars because if you have the time to set up and get a kick in with these, full force, right in the sweet spot of where these kubakickz are on your boot, you WILL DO DAMAGE to your assailant, and I think that's the main point. My point is, if your laces are higher up on your shoe/boot than normal, you might not have the ability to even use these in a life or death situation and still you might in a split second think "let me try these kubakicks" and try to effectuate some sort of kick with them and fail because you wasted precious milliseconds on setting up to do some sort of "good formed" kick augmented with these things. At least that was my first impression when I put them on my boot (as low as possible) and remembered how seldom my Yellow Belt Tae Kwan Do training helped me when I was in fights in the past and had to defend myself any which way I could, but that's the rub, what's most likely to happen, I just don't see myself getting in the types of "kicks" I'd need to use in my next sticky situation to actually stop my assailant before he gets in his shots.

Dangerous*
As other reviews have stated, if you want two you need to order two. These are a great idea but be cautious. They are dangerous to the recipent, as well as the deliverer. Despite how much training you may have in proper kicking techniques, these can cause some serious damage to your feet. Mainly because of their narrow profile. The base of each spike is about the diameter of a dime, and the platform extends about 1/4" on each side. So, in the split second you may decide to use them you can easily hit the recipent at a funny angle causing the Kickz to fold to one side, and depending on the force implemented, they can go as far 90 degrees which would easily destroy ligament and severly damage the tiny bones in your feet. Now I'm not trying to deter anybody from purchasing these because they are a great product and i would purchase them again in a second. Just trying to prevent someone getting hurt. So heres what I did to make them more effective: I first tried to go with larger laces and strategically tightened them around the spikes and through the small holes that go around the platform, which I believe someone commented that they were useless. That may be, but it definitely made a difference in my opinion. The problem with the laces being so tight in that area on a pair of running shoes as well as boots made it just plain uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. So what I did that made these things absolutely perfect is, I cut 2 small pieces of 1/4" aluminum about 2 1/4" X 3", took a ball pien hammer to each piece to round them out just a small ammount, to compensate the slight contour of my foot, then took a grinder to the edges to round out the edges so they dont affect my shoes. then used a combination of metal-to-plastic modeling glue, then a layer of gorilla glue to put the aluminum on the Kickz. it may seem like a lot just for these little guys but I like the idea so much i couldn't bring myself to return them.

Great—Even Better with Simple DIY Enhancement
Disclaimer: check your local laws regarding weighted/blunt weapons. This item is great in its base form. The price is a bit sus but the good thing is that you only need two (unless you want to deck out ALL your footwear). If you want to add more kinetic force to your kicks, simply buy a six-pack of egg or bullet-shaped fishing sinkers ( I forgot the size, just take one of the kickz with you to compare). Get them in your choice of metal: lead, steel or tungsten. Next, partly fill the cavities with clear, outdoor silicone; then add the weight into the cavity and seal with another layer of silicone. Wipe the excess (don’t worry about making a mess—no one’s gonna see the underside). Let it cure for at least 24 hours. That’s it! Right now, I’m looking for a 1/8” rubber/neoprene sheet to add to the bottom to protect my tarsals. That’s the only drawback of this device. I would trim it a little wider to give more protective surface area. Then I’d drill holes using the pre existing ones as guides. Overall, a great piece and even better when upgraded.

Very strong and probably very painful
I haven't had to use these, and hopefully I never will, but I feel confident that if I do, they will do the job just fine. I pressed them into my own skin just to have a feel, and even that light effort hurt, so I can only imagine when they feel like launched with force into someone's shin or groin! I have them laced into my walking boots. Just having them on me makes me feel a bit safer and less helpless when out and about by myself. The clear colour is actually very noticeable, so I just 'painted' them with a black magic marker. Voila! Hardly noticeable now on my boots. If I can get a hold of another set (a lot of American products are hard to get in the UK, and/or super expensive), I will buy them for another pair of shoes so I don't have to unlace and relace when I want to wear different shoes. I recommend that every woman have at least one pair of these!

It fits nice a snug around the laces of by shoes
Came as described relatively fast, only comes with a single kick though, so that's disappointing. I read the other reviews before I bought this so I knew what I was getting into. It fits nice a snug around the laces of by shoes, and you can't even feel it's there! Absolutely no one has noticed or brought it up yet, so it is definitely covert.

Best non-lethal covert weapon for self-defense...
It's one of the best non-lethal covert weapon for self-defense... Really easy to install on any boots or jogging shoes. No need to bring any kubotan with you, these KubaKickz works as espected and even more than I thought! I've practiced myself on a "BOB" punching bag and it started to make some little dents into the rubber flesh. This is perfect for self-defense, for men and women. It is covert and well suited for almost any footwear.
