Good product but doesn't hold enough water for a length of time. It depends on what a person desires.

Great planters for my new deck

Very pleased with my purchase, with the self watering feature my plants will be able to survive when I am away for a few days. Glad I read the reviews because they appear to be a creamy off-white (not very practical) but are in fact a neutral, not too dark taupe. My only gripe is with the packaging (Amazon no longer asks for package evaluation) so I hope someone will read this review and pass it on to the powers that be. I received 4 planters, packaged 2 per box, one pair was stacked, the other pair were loose (maybe they started stacked). The box size was huge, c.40 x 20 x 15, if you stack 2 together, you only need a box 16" cube max and they wouldn't be able to shift around and a lot easier for the Fedex delivery person, not to mention the recipient. The only positive would be to discourage "porch pirates". Since starting this review, I have now done my planting and have the following additional comments. Be careful that the bottom reservoir saucer is firmly clipped into place, you will hear a snap at each of the four holes where the knobs on the saucer fit into. If they aren't in firmly, when the reservoir is full of water, it may detach if you lift the planter to move it (that happened to me). I was somewhat disappointed that the rim was a rather thin plastic, when you move the planter it is likely that you will hold it around the curved rim. Over a period of time, thinner plastic can become brittle and the rim may break.

Perfect size

It's hard to water from the bottom, so I just water from the top till I figure it out.

This is very big. The dimensions are exact, but I guess I couldn't imagine how big it actually was. The top diameter is the 17 inch dimension listed in the description, and it's wider at the top. The 16 inch measurement listed in the title is basically the inside, the space you have to fill. But the final overall thing is pretty big. I originally bought it for a plant that would have liked a bit of a smaller pot. So I switched to a peace lily instead, and gave its pot to the plant I originally bought this for. Peace Lilies can grow bushy, and would appreciate the extra space. They also like moist soil, and that big thing won't dry out quickly at all. You need more or less a full 8 quart potting mix bag to fill it, so be prepared. I wasn't! Still, very happy with this nice size surprise for the price. Have not used the self watering function, so can't say about that. I would imagine it's not ideal with a pot of this size. You would need a plant that you know has roots that go deep deep down to reach the moisture. As a general rule I don't like the idea of self watering pots unless you go away on holiday. Prefer to take care of my plants manually, if you know what I mean. I just use those as a good way to buy pot and draining dish in one, and I like that there's a whole there which would help excess water evaporate easier. I am definitely a fan of ceramic or clay pots, but for something this big, the plastic alternative works for me!

A good solution for weekend homes to keep plants watered

Glad to find a reasonable self watering flower pot. It is great when you can not be around to water for a week. I was disappointing that they sold out of the eight inch size pots.

Questionable durability/quality

Arrived with a hole in the outer lip. Couldn't find the missing piece so I don't think it was damaged in transit. Poor quality control or perhaps a damaged return product that was re-wrapped and shipped to me. I think, functionally, it'll still work fine. Just a very big aesthetic issue that calls into question the quality of the material/manufacturing.
