Product Doesn't Match Photo

Purist Beware. The spade bit shipped is NOT the one shown in the product photograph. The product photo shows a bit with "spurs" at the spade cutting edge but the bit shipped was one with a "chamfer" beveled edge. I wanted the spur edge to match the other spade bits in my set. I could have gotten the beveled edge bit at a local hardware store for lower price but chose this one because of the product photo. Technically it's the right size, just not the shape I expected. Not worth the trouble to return.

Not As Pictured

As other reviewers have stated, you do not receive the bit pictured. The bit you receive does not have the "spurs" on the edges, but is instead a flat cutting edge all across. I gave the bit a go, as you can see with the wood debris on the bit. Without the cutting points, the hole is very rough. The bit cuts fast without question, but the hole quality is poor in comparison to a traditional bit. This bit works for its intended purpose of fast drilling holes with no concern of cut quality. The bit itself is typical good Irwin quality. However, it is NOT what is being pictured and advertised and what I thought I was purchasing. This negative review is centered around the bait-and-switch the seller has done to many customers. For anyone without a deep understanding of spade bits (the vast majority of us), an quick internet search of "spade bits without spurs" will give you all the info you need.

I need this bit for a small project that I've not completed, but the test drilling went fine.

Many issues here, but mostly not as pictured and useless for my project.

As several other newer reviewers have mentioned, the item pictured is not what you're getting. The tines on the edges are missing. If you're drilling into something very soft without grain, like plastic, this will do a credible job at moderate speed. But for wood, it will rip up the outer edges of the hole quite badly, even at moderate speed, and you'd want to avoid using it on anything hard like oak or hickory. The delivery was also horrible in ways I can't explain if I want this review to be posted to warn others about the bait and switch with the picture for the item. Overall, this entire order was the worst experience I've ever had with Amazon. I did get refunded in full, but the aggravation lingers, and the bit went into the recycling bin unopened.

Nice wood spade bit.

Ordered this particular size so I could have a tight fitting hole to use a 5/8 threaded rod as an axel for a custom tool cart. This bit cut clean and fast for a spade bit very impressed. Update: So impressed I bought an entire set of these to replace my old set of spade bits.
